- A $45 non-refundable application fee is required for U.S Citizens or U.S. permanent
resident card holders.听
- A $75 non-refundable application fee is required for international students.
Applications are considered for Fall Semester entrance only. Priority application deadline is December 15th. International applicants should also
have completed their current program by May 1. The number of available Ph.D. and M.S.
positions varies each year and depends upon faculty research funding. Only funded
faculty can accept students into their labs.听听

degree requirements
Applicants must hold an earned 4 year baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) from an
accredited college or university, and have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Typically, applicants will have an undergraduate major in Biology or a related discipline
such as Biochemistry or Biophysics.听Students with other majors such as Chemistry or
Physics are encouraged to apply, but their coursework should include several semesters
in biology.听
A Master鈥檚 degree is not required to apply to a PhD program.听
Laboratory research is highly recommended for all applicants.听
GRE requirement

University of Toledo students do not need to send their current University of Toledo
transcripts. You听must听list the University of Toledo in the academic history section of your application
for admission.
Contact all previous higher education institutions you attended and have them send
your official transcripts to the University of Toledo following the guidelines below.听

- A transcript is only considered official if it is sent electronically from the issuing
institution directly to the University of Toledo, or (if hard copy) it is in the original
sealed envelope with a registrar鈥檚 stamp intact.

The objective of the University of Toledo is to increase opportunities for persons

of scientific information in the area of biomedical sciences
- must have the ability to communicate effectively with all persons involved in graduate
training; where such training involves interacting with additional persons (e.g.,
patients or volunteers for experiments), an effective level of communication skill
is similarly required
- must be able to master concepts, show evidence of a reasonable level of deductive
reasoning, and be able to acquire the essential skills needed for presentation of
research data
- must possess sufficient postural control, neuromuscular control and eye-to-hand control
to independently use standard laboratory/medical/surgical instruments
- must have the ability to independently perform, at a reasonable level, all laboratory
or other manipulations required for research leading to the Ph.D. or M.S. in Biomedical
Sciences degree

Ph.D. students (domestic and international) in good standing are eligible to receive
a full tuition scholarship, stipend that is at the National Institutes of Health/National
Research Service award level ($28,000 per year), and health insurance. Ph.D. students
are not required to be teaching assistants to receive the tuition scholarship and
stipend, although teaching experiences are available to interested students.

Do I need to find a mentor before I apply or enter the program?
Students accepted into our program do not need to find a mentor before they enter.
All students undergo laboratory rotations during their first year and then make a
mutual decision with a mentor for their dissertation research.
Do students receiving funding?
All PhD students receive a living stipend of $28,000 per year, tuition waiver, and
health insurance.听
The Biomedical Science Program research tracks are no longer able to offer any funding
support for MS applicants.

Is teaching a requirement of the program/stipend?
No, students are not required to complete teaching assistantships.听
Do you offer application fee waivers?
We are unable to offer application fee waivers.听

How many students are accepted each year?
The number of students accepted various from year to year. We encourage applicants
